Affective Filter "Krashen's monitor model"
How do the emotional factors influence English language learning?
"In the real world, conversations with sympathetic native speakers who are willing to help the acquirer understand are very helful" Stephen Krashen.
Comprehensible input
Stephen Krashen says that the only way to learn a language is by understanding messages. At the beginning of this lesson, he made two examples - one considering all the patterns of a traditional language teacher and the other example employing his theory on comprehensible input. Can you notice a difference between both ways?
Language acquisition theory.
Krashen's monitor model
1) The natural word order hypothesis
We acquire the rules of language in a predictable order
2) The acquisition/learning hypothesis
"Adults have two distinctive ways of developing competences in second languages...acquisition, that is using language for real communication...learning...knowing about language" (Krashen and Terrell 1983)
3) The monitor hypothesis
"Conscious learning...can only be used as a monitor or an editor (Krashen and Terrell, 1983)
4) The INPUT hypothesis
"Human acquires language in only one way- By understanding messages or by receiving comprehensible input.
5) The affective filter hypothesis
"A mental block caused by affective factors...that parents input from reaching the language acquisition device (LAD) (Krashen, 1985 p 100)
